About This Collection

The images in this collection have been drawn from the archives of the Sonoma County Historical Society, which were reproduced by the Sonoma County Library and form a significant component of the Library's image collection. The SCHS Collection chronicles many aspects of Sonoma County life, including many images of people, places and events in western Sonoma County area from the late 1800s through the 1950s, collected by Occidental historian, Harry Lapham.

Sonoma County Historical Society -- 7 Flags Over Sonoma County

The Society

The Sonoma County Historical Society has been working to preserve our rich historical heritage since 1962. The Society has taken a leadership role in:

  • The preservation of historic structures, the fragile and irreplaceable reminders of our past, that would otherwise not be saved for future generations
  • The publication of unique books and articles about regional history
  • Efforts with other historical societies, museums, and libraries in the county to share resources and work towards preservation of our regional heritage

Please see the Society's website for more information, including membership application.

Maps and Streetview

The Google maps and Streetview images displayed below many of the Collection's images are based on the best information available in the records. In some cases, that information may be incorrect or Google was unable to interpret the address correctly (more than a few street names have changed over time and lots may have been renumbered). If you find an incorrect location for a particular image, we welcome corrections! Please use the comment feature at the bottom of the page and provide more accurate information if you have it. We verify the corrections and update our information.

Unknown Locations and Subjects

We also welcome information on unidentified locations and people in our collections -- unfortunately, we have many such images . If you know something more, leave a comment on this site or at our Flickr collection of unidentified images.
